Learn HOW TO WRITE A RESUME : HOW TO WRITE A COVER LETTER : HOW TO LAND A JOB

I’m 15 and I’m moving to Canberra, Australia next month, and I’ll be homestaying with another family so I might need to get everything myself. Do you know how to get a good job and would I need a curriculum vitae?

You may not be permitted to work on your visa – you need to check. University students are permitted to work but I am not sure about high school students here on a student visa. You need to be eligible for a Tax File Number and this is where you will get in trouble if your visa does not permit you to have this (you have to prove your Australian citizenship or PR status or your work visa status).

If you are permitted to work – the other thing to consider is that you will be asking your home stay family to drive you to and from your job, which is not part of their “contract” with having you on a home stay. They have their own driving duties for their children to do and it may not be possible for you to add additional duties to them without discussion.

If you are moving from overseas on a student visa, you can’t work simple. High School students on a student visa are unable to work pure and simple.

If you are moving from another part of Australia, really the only work options open to you are place like McDonalds, KFC, Woolworths and other retail centres. Generally a CV is a good with school results and a couple of adult, non family referees especially if you have worked somewhere else.

At 15 you are not allowed to work full-time in Australia. You need to be at school, in TAFE, or have an apprenticeship. You can, however, get part-time work at places such as KMart, Woolworths, Coles, Target, IGA, BigW. Avoid places like KFC and McDonald’s as the pay and conditions are much worth the the supermarkets and department stores.
