Nursing is a great vocation, and many people aspire to it. I was weighing up nursing myself, and received some great guidance from the site in the box below, which guided me well. They have assistance on other professions too.

Ideally you want to work as a RN not a medical assistant. A friend of mine went through a medical assisting program and the job in my opinion is a glorified CNA role. Essentially you are able to take blood, do a few simple medical laboratory tests, and learn basic nursing skills so that you can work in a doctor’s office or lab. Pay for the role is a bit above minimum, the jobs really are not there, and because of the role there is very little opportunity for advancement. The lack of opportunity for advancement means the role, in my opinion, will become boring after a while thereby forcing you to decide to continue in role that gives you very little satisfaction or seek further training. Reason being for the lack of opportunity is because are not trained enough to take the LPN / LVN test and you are not trained enough to be a laboratory technician. In essence you know a little something about allot of things. However since you do not have a state license and you do not have the skills there is limited opportunity for you to take on more responsibility.

In my honest opinion since you spend the same amount of time, two years, training you are better off doing your associates degree in nursing. The pay for nursing is much higher and the job opportunities are also there. If I had the choice between medical assisting or training as an RN I would not even think twice about studying to become an RN.

Nurse. I have two people in my class who have been medical assitants at one point who wished they had done nursing instead. There are more oppertunies for nurses.

I am a current nursing student. My aunt went for CNA/MA first, she is starting nursing school soon. My grandmother who has been a nurse for 40 years and who is now an instructor at a college in Georgia. She told me to be a CNA/STNA first. That will show you part of the field. Being a MA it shows you a little bit but CNA is the bedside part.

Go into nursing, you will get paid way more. A new MA starts out at $13-$15 an hour. A new grad nurse starts at $22-$30 an hour. Plus you will have a degree.
